Web Designing Tools

Blog Tools for Web Design?
I am building a php and mysql website for a class, I plan on using this site in the future and want to go a little above and beyond and create a blog. I talked to a few IT guys the other day and they gave me the name of a few pieces of software that could fill my needs, but with finals and studying, I forgot what they were called.
The idea is that these tools allowed me to create the blog post, store the text in a database, store photographs in a folder on the web server, and I would be able to output both of these with the pictures throughout the text (basically already formatted how I like it). I need to just provide my code for the web page that surrounds the article/blog (blog contains just the text and pictures appropriately located)
Any ideas of free software that would allow me to do this would be appreciated
I will answer any questions if this is not clear

Designing Data-Intensive Web Applications $53.99 The most prominent Web applications in use today are data-intensive. Scores of database management systems across the Internet access and maintain large amounts of structured data for e-commerce, on-line trading, banking, digital libraries, and other high-volume sites. Developing and maintaining these data-intensive applications is an especially complex, multi-disciplinary activity, requiring all the tools and techniques that software engineering can provide. This book represents a breakthrough for Web application developers. Using hundreds of illustrations and an elegant intuitive modeling language, the authors-all internationally-known database researchers-present a methodology that fully exploits the conceptual modeling approach of software engineering, from idea to application. Readers will learn not only how to harness the design technologies of relational databases for use on the Web, but also how to transform their conceptual designs of data-intensive Web applications into effective software components. * A fully self-contained introduction and practitioner’s guide suitable for both technical and non-technical members of staff, as well as students. * A methodology, development process, and notation (WebML) based on common practice but optimized for the unique challenges of high-volume Web applications. * Completely platform- and product-independent; even the use of WebML is optional. * Based on well-known industry standards such as UML and the Entity Relationship Model. * Enhanced by its own Web site (http://www.webml.org), containing additional examples, papers, teaching materials, developers’ resources, and exercises with solutions. |

Designing Interfaces $6.98 Designing a good interface isn’t easy. Users demand software that is well-behaved, good-looking, and easy to use. Your clients or managers demand originality and a short time to market. Your UI technology — web applications, desktop software, even mobile devices — may give you the tools you need, but little guidance on how to use them well. UI designers over the years have refined the art of interface design, evolving many best practices and reusable ideas. If you learn these, and understand why the best user interfaces work so well, you too can design engaging and usable interfaces with less guesswork and more confidence. "Designing Interfaces" captures those best practices as design patterns — solutions to common design problems, tailored to the situation at hand. Each pattern contains practical advice that you can put to use immediately, plus a variety of examples illustrated in full color. You’ll get recommendations, design alternatives, and warnings on when not to use them. Each chapter’s introduction describes key design concepts that are often misunderstood, such as affordances, visual hierarchy, navigational distance, and the use of color. These give you a deeper understanding of why the patterns work, and how to apply them with more insight. A book can’t design an interface for you — no foolproof design process is given here — but "Designing Interfaces" does give you concrete ideas that you can mix and recombine as you see fit. Experienced designers can use it as a sourcebook of ideas. Novice designers will find a roadmap to the world of interface and interaction design, with enough guidance to start using these patterns immediately. |

Designing Web Navigation $39.99 Thoroughly rewritten for today’s web environment, this bestselling book offers a fresh look at a fundamental topic of web site development: navigation design. Amid all the changes to the Web in the past decade, and all the hype about Web 2.0 and various “rich” interactive technologies, the basic problems of creating a good web navigation system remain. Designing Web Navigation demonstrates that good navigation is not about technology-it’s about the ways people find information, and how you guide them. Ideal for beginning to intermediate web designers, managers, other non-designers, and web development pros looking for another perspective, Designing Web Navigation offers basic design principles, development techniques and practical advice, with real-world examples and essential concepts seamlessly folded in. How does your web site serve your business objectives? How does it meet a user’s needs? You’ll learn that navigation design touches most other aspects of web site development. This book: Provides the foundations of web navigation and offers a framework for navigation design Paints a broad picture of web navigation and basic human information behavior Demonstrates how navigation reflects brand and affects site credibility Helps you understand the problem you’re trying to solve before you set out to design Thoroughly reviews the mechanisms and different types of navigation Explores “information scent” and “information shape” Explains “persuasive” architecture and other design concepts Covers special contexts, such as navigation design for web applications Includes an entire chapter on tagging While Designing Web Navigation focuses on creating navigation systems for large, information-rich sites serving a business purpose, the principles and techniques in the book also apply to small sites. Well researched and cited, this book serves as an excellent reference on the topic, as well as a superb teaching guide. Each chapter ends with suggested reading and a set of ques |

Designing for the Social Web $32 No matter what type of web site or application you’re building, social interaction among the people who use it will be key to its success. They will talk about it, invite their friends, complain, sing its high praises, and dissect it in countless ways. With the right design strategy you can use this social interaction to get people signing up, coming back regularly, and bringing others into the fold. With tons of examples from real-world interfaces and a touch of the underlying social psychology theory, Joshua Porter shows you how to design your next great social web application. Inside, you’ll discover:. • The real reasons why people participate online and the psychology behind them. • The Usage Lifecycle—or how people use your web application over time. • How to get people past that trickiest of hurdles: sign-up. • What to do when you’ve launched a web application and nobody is using it. • How to analyze the effectiveness of your application screens and flows. • How to grow your social web application from zero users to 1000—and beyond. Designing for the social web is about much more than adding features. It’s about embracing the social interaction of the people who make you successful—and then designing smartly to encourage it. |
