Pet Health Insurance-Poll Question?

I am sure this question has been posed before so please do not refer me to an old posting. I am posing it now, because this industry is growing in popularity (from what I am reading) and things do change pretty quickly these days (people’s opinions, experiences, etc.).

So what I am posing to all out there, primarily those people who have pet insurance or those who have had it in the recent past, is what are your thoughts? I have a four year old male Pug and have been on the fence regarding this issue for awhile. I would like to hear all of the pros and cons out there, as well as people’s personal experiences with such companies. I would also like to know if there are any particular companies which are more reputable and/or easier to work with than others. I know I can only choose one answer, however I will make sure to give ample thumbs up to all that are kind enough to share, and I will try to pick one, or I can leave it to you, the voters.

I have my dog insured with Trupanion. I’ve only had it a couple months, so I haven’t made any claims yet, thought I am happy with it so far. They seemed to be the most straight forward and easy to understand company. (No hidden clauses and tricks)

I know that they review and pay claims within a couple of days typically which is good. They also don’t have claim limits or benefits schedules, so no matter what your bill is, they cover 90% no matter how big.

Cons: The cons of course are that any insurance company doesn’t cover preexisting conditions, so if your pet already has cancer or diabetes or what-have-you, then you still have to pay for it on your own. Also, that you never know if your pet will get hurt/sick. You may pay premiums for years and never have to file a claim. But it also goes the other way too; maybe your pet gets hurt and costs you $3000, then good thing you got insurance!

Which leads to the pros: If you get hit with an unexpected bill, you’re covered! Which is basically the point of insurance – peace of mind and saving you from unexpected financial crises.

As a recent college grad with low income, I’m glad I have pet insurance because (after recently putting around $3000 in car repairs) I could not possibly afford expensive vet bills.
